The residency at I: project space was founded in 2014 to offer a space where artists could live and work, providing time for reflection and production over a period of between two and three months in the inspiring setting of Beijing. The key to the ‘residency’ concept is the transposition of artists into a cultural context different from their own, accelerating reflection on one’s own work and the cultural and social discourse.
Every residency is tailored to the unique needs and projects of each artist. Residencies lie at the core of I: project space’s curatorial strategy and forms the foundation of a lasting collaboration with every resident. The resident artist have access to assistants whom can undertake research and source workshops in China, facilitating a broad spectrum of production.
Relationships to the local context work best when the residency host acts as an agent, helping artists to establish contacts with the local artistic field and creating vivid exchanges. To make this possible I: project space includes a public program with ongoing projects, exhibitions, lectures and open studio events.
With its broad network of local and global partners, I: project space connects residents with the dynamic art scene in China and fosters lasting relationships between China and abroad.
I: project space has an exhibition space located in the heart of old Beijing, the residency courtyard overlooks the historic White Pagoda. The historic city center brings art back into a dialogue with local life and creates a perfect symbiosis with the residency through the hutongs, with its variety shops and craftsmen. Residents enjoy the advantage of convenient transportation through the Beijing cityscape. I: project space is proximate to a vibrant network of independent art spaces, music venues and other cultural incubators.
All artists at the residency program are invited to present the findings from their stay. They have the flexibility to do so in the form of an exhibition, workshop, talk, performance, screening, or other forms as they see fit.
The event will be published on social media platforms and promoted together with project partners. I: project space’s broad network enables exposure on local and international levels, and potentials for the project to continue in various ways including follow up projects, travelling exhibitions, publications, etc.
A furnished living space and a shared studio and bathroom / kitchen.
I: project space and its residency program operate non-profit, but to cover the costs of maintaining the residency and assistance during the residency we charge a monthly fee. Selected artists will receive all documentation necessary to apply for funding. Occasionally, through certain initiatives and partnerships, we will announce open calls for fully-funded opportunities.
