KTVs are combinations of public and private spaces. It is a public place in the sense of that everyone is allowed to enter a KTV for consumption; but it is also private in a way that the space is divided into many closed rooms for various groups of people to sing and have fun only in front of those who are inthe same room. KTV suite as a type of heterotopia, a concept proposed by Michel Foucault that posits a fantasy space existing outside time. KTV places provideone of society’s few shared spaces that allow individuals to share their happiness, sorrows and dreams. KTVs also function as platforms for everyone to become the center of attention and a star even if it is maybe only for one song.

It is a space to establish and maintain social connections while being surrounded by the most extravagant interior designs and the small rooms grand the customers a private, autonomous territory, free from disturbance. Here, the individual can create his own temporary space in the cover of the dark room and with the helping distraction of a TV screen. The exterior of a KTV at night, the blaze of lights makes it nearly impossible to imagine its daytime appearance and provides no means for grasping the logic of the interior space. Presenting the image of an outer skin, KTVs are a version of a postmodern hyperspace as Frederic Jameson described them in “Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism”. Paraphrasing Jameson’s words, a KTV’s hyperspace doesn’t help us to map our position in a mappable external word, butit provides a temporary refuge.
For IAS 2017 we invited people from around the world that are also taking and creating space for art in their respective country to curate their private list of songs to be sung in a KTV parlor in Beijing.

Curated by:
Rob Knijn –Alternative Art Guide (The Hague)
Alternative Art Guide is produced by The Naked, an artist-run initiative founded to show the multiplicity of alternative or independent spaces operating in the world today. The Naked has embarked on a collective, collaborative mission through which a global view is given from different local perspectives. Working with independent spaces and curators locally, The Nakedintends to give a ‘street level’ view of contemporary art. Knowing that it is impossible to create a true image of the contemporary art world from a single vantage point, showing these dynamics creates a better understanding of the present.
