After a two week wait Luo Qiang will open her exhibition in Shijia Hutong 23. In this old courtyard she will show the work "The Creator". "The Creator" will make use of the plants, the empty rooms and passageways. All works developed were newly developed for this place. It is the attempt to create something new in this for many years forgotten place. "After the first creation, they were not satisfied and created antoher thousand things. And then the thousand things created another one according to their needs... even worlds, which made them believe more and more that they were creators." This is communicated through the new work by artist Luo Qiang.
The concept of “Remixing the Local” is to combine participatory art and social practice to enter a dialogue with Beijing’s city and its Hutong spaces. Presenting art pieces on the street and in various courtyards of the historically charged streets of Shijia Hutong and Neiwubujie, the concept is to link objects, images, processes, people, locations, histories, and discourses in the physical space. Working with and for the inhabitants, to give a voice to many untold stories that constitute this neighborhood. The artworks should function as starting points without staying there, but to think with them and also away from and against them.
The emphasis on human relations can be summarized by what Nicolas Bourriaud has termed'relational aesthetics'. According to him the basic source material for artistsare human relations, and they make use of social exchange, make communication processes visual and interact with the spectators in art works. By stressing these relations and interactions, we want to create a monument composed of gestures from everyday life and layers of memories of the community.
“Remixing The Local” is further utilizing the momentum of the ONE Hutong festival to leave the ivory tower of the White Cube as you can find it in art galleries and traditional museum spaces. The ONE Hutong festival is instead opening up to more site-specific and context-sensitive practices. As despite the huge numbers who visit galleries and museums, there is still a gap between the art world and daily life of Beijing’s inhabitants. But if art is coming to the street where you live, where you do your grocery shopping or mingle with your family and friends, you have every right to state an opinion.
