OPEN CALL: BEIJING22 公开召募:北京22

Two research grants for Beijing22 are given out to Beijing-based researchers, artists, curators, humanists and architects a.o. Application is open until May 12, 2019.

THE GRANT
After its inaugural year, we are happy to announce the Open Call 2019 for the Beijing22 Research Grants. The grants are intended to research and elaborate content, covering the topics utopia, urban development and the ongoing transformation of Beijing under the influences of the city planning strategy "Jing-Jin-Ji" and the upcoming Winter Olympics in 2022. Grant holders should be given the opportunity to research in and between thematic fields such as art, science, architecture, sociology, and others.

FOR WHOM?
The grants are specifically intended for persons living and working in and around the Beijing area, since the grant offers financial support for research-purposes only and does not finance additional travel-costs.
The grant is addressing, among others:
• Artists
• Curators
• Journalists
• Humanists
• Architects
Two grants will be awarded in mid 2019.

PURPOSE OF THE GRANT
The artistic/curatorial/scientific development requires the possibility of developing new, original ideas and approaches. For this reason, grant holders should be given the opportunity to carry out self-selected research projects, e.g.:
• Research or preparation for a specific topic
• Development of project ideas and drafts
• Development of new/different approaches to relevant themes

The results of the research grant may include several short texts on topics such as utopia and urban development, longer essays and reflections on historical conditions and current practices of urban phenomena or concrete journalistic researches on the development of Beijing on its way to a new type of Megacity. In addition, reviews of artistic positions, (cooperative) project sketches, performative writing, or other expressions dealing with the topic of "utopia" can also be the results of the research period.

Beijing22 is an on-going research project, therefore the goal for the grant is to develop content that can be published on beijing22.org and made available for later research.

SCOPE OF SUPPORT
The two research grants are endowed with 1,500 € each and will be distributed in installments of € 750 each at the beginning and three weeks after the start of the grant period.

ABOUT BEIJING22
Beijing22 is an open, independent, curatorial long-term project that will examine the development of Beijing on the road to the Winter Olympics in 2022 and urban transformations with regard to the current Megacity Jing-Jin-Ji. This way is accompanied by exhibitions, publications, roundtables, symposia and other activities. Different positions and perspectives of Chinese and international creators, scientists are gathered.

The core element of Beijing22 is the online database which will collect means of a continuing discourse as well as artistic and scientific positions. This will create a publicly accessible archive which will accompany the developments in a parallel and discursive manner, rather than retrospectively. This will enable specific observations and analyses of the factors of change concerning cultural policies, urban developments, the change of the image of Beijing and individual perspectives on these aspects. Thus, one of the greatest urban developments in recent history will be made accessible. This can become a base from where a comprehensible understanding can be drawn, between the
relations of such mass events, culture, life, politics, international exchange of knowledge and economic innovations.

This form of longterm documentation can help to contextualize changes and phenomena and therefore can be a reference for a variety of disciplines. The Database will be open for submissions: artists, scientists, writers, designers, architects, sociologists etc. can hand in contributions.
